“Systems Crash” is a new series of public lectures jointly organized by Piet Zwart Institute Media Design and WORM Rotterdam. The 20th century established the notion that the world is based on systems: computer systems, financial systems, social and biological systems, each of them with their own structures, rules, gurus and hackers. But don’t the recent crashes of systems suggest that “system” could be a problematic notion by itself? Does the word obscure rather than explain things? Has the belief in systems become our new religion? If god is dead, don’t we also have to declare “system” dead in order to escape this monotheistic system society?
